Cold hands, warm hearts – Sweden is the most charitable country in the world.
Sweden donated $690m to charity in 2010 – high in its own right, but also the highest level of donation per capita worldwide.
The powerhouse that is the US donated $4,900m – seven times that of Sweden, but far below it per capita (14th worldwide).
The Top 10 ranking is as follows (although sadly, because of the nature of the graphic, we don’t know the figure per capita – this really annoys me):
So, both the UK and Ireland make it into the Top 10 – and it seems the most charitable nations are typically very well off, tending to be towards the high-end in terms of living costs (particularly those Nordic countries topping the tables).
But hey, at least you can tell someone to shut up next time they call UK/Ireland people selfish and ungenerous.
